Hello forum,

I found SMath last week via Martin Kraska's Calculix page: https://github.com/mkraska/CalculiX-Examples.
Thank you Martin, thank you Andrey Ivashov; I've been looking for a math worksheet for several years, I'm not sure how I missed your fantastic program.

I'm reading the book by Bernard Liengme and have become interested in using the Maxima plugin.

I receive an error when following Maximaplugin from http://en.smath.info/list/plugins:
http://en.smath.info/vie...e68-e32b5badce41/summary

I have 0.98.6179 working using mono in Ubuntu 16.10; it's really impressive.
Is the Maxima plugin compatible with 0.98.6179 / mono / Linux?

Tim

The Maxima plugin doesn't work under Linux.

On my support page I provide a portable windows installation with maxima pre-configured (follow the link in my signature). It is based on 0.98.6179. The plugin doesn't work with 0.98.6325.

Martin,
Thank you for your link to the portable version of SMath, I'll give that a go.
Also, I really appreciate the wealth of Calculix techniques and examples that you provide.
kind regards,

I have installed the regular Windows x64 version 0.98 (build: 6179) and have installed the Maxima Plug-in from the online gallery.
Upon opening SM I get the following warning:

Plug-insFailedToStart.png

I don't see how to remove or update the plug-in (CoolProps plug-in updated ok).

Maybe I have overlooked a step?

Click on "Close", here is Smath eager to run.
Same happened to me after few weeks of running fine
w/o this unexplained error message. It might be enough
to remove from the directory and re-download ?

What do you mean by "regular version"? Is it the portable version from my support page at THB?

The Maxima plugin isn't easy to configure, therefore I compiled the portable distribution (see link in the signature) which should run out of the box (from an usb stick or whatever directory where you dump the archive), including the interactive handbook (try the [?] button in the tool bar). It should work with Win7.

Problems with win10 have been reported. As I run just win7, there is not much I can do about it.

For full functionality of the maxima plugin, the 2014 version of the portable distribution should be used (at the cost of loosing great new SMath features). Basic problem is that in the meantime the integrate function has been protected against being taken over by 3rd party plugins. You can still use Maxima for integration but that involves workarounds and exceptions, see the interactive handbook for details.

Once the portable distribution is installed (unpacked) you can update the other plugins but don't touch SMath and the maxima plugin.

The Maxima plugin is under maintenance again. Thanks to Andrey and Davide, who made adjustments to API changes and helped me with getting started in Visual Studio and C#.

For now, I have made the most urgent fixes.

Todo:
- More testing
- Cleanup (remove obsolete stuff)
- Update Maxima

The plugin is not yet updated in the online gallery. If you want to try it with the current beta SMath (0.98.6398) then you can download the plugin from the gallery and exchange the dll by the attached one (in the zip file).

Plugin Maxima Test.sm (259kb) downloaded 70 time(s).
Plugin Maxima Test.pdf (934kb) downloaded 93 time(s).
MaximaPlugin.zip (65kb) downloaded 62 time(s).

Takeover is back!

I found a way to get MaximaTakeover() working again, such that sum(), int(), lim(), diff() and det() can be re-directed to Maxima functions and thereby obtain symbolic capabilities.

The new implementation of MaximaTakeover() now uses custom definitions in the current context, thus MaximaTakeover doesn't any morec cause history-dependence and interdependence between multiple open sheets.

The sources are in the latest SVN, as well as an updated version of the interactive handbook.

MaximaPlugin.zip (66kb) downloaded 54 time(s).
Plugin Maxima Test.sm (302kb) downloaded 68 time(s).
Plugin Maxima Test.pdf (1,103kb) downloaded 75 time(s).

The plugin is not yet updated in the online gallery. If you want to try it with the current beta SMath (0.98.6398) then you can download the plugin from the gallery and exchange the dll by the attached one (in the zip file).

Once the PDF handbook is updated to be consistent, I shall compile a new portable distribution with Maxima.

Todo:
- Bugfixing
- Cleanup
- Update and downstrip Maxima
- Simplification of the Installation (Extension manager only)

In fact, there was a 3 years gap in the development Sad But now I am determined to at least keeping up with SMath API development and perhaps fixing some bugs. Under the hood, there is much to do for transition from a mere demonstrator to a robust application.

Did you get the latest version working? Feel free to report bugs or feature requests in the ticket system.

That's the point: Smath for Design Engineers, all in all.
Already a most viable tool !

Thanks for plugin update. I'm an asiduous user of SMath+Maxima for my Machine Design course. This semester all my university is updating to Win 10 and I saw that maxima crashes in this windows version. Do you have any suggestions or ideas for a short time solution?.

Thanks in advance!

I did some basic adjustments to adapt the plugin to the current windows maxima version 5.40. This essentially works now, but my impression is that the command processing is not that stable as it used to be (there seem to be \r\n versus \n issues in the socket communication, which I still need to resolve.

If SMath 0.98.6398 and Maxima 5.40 work under win10, then chances are good that also the plugin works. Personally, I'd rather switch from win7 to linux than to win10, but I am ready to care for feedback from win10 users.

Thus first step for you is to see if both progs run.

Maxima 5.40 takes 640MB of disk space if installed, among them more than 50MB just for gnuplot (with full docs and examples). Thus shipping this as part of a portable distribution might not be the best idea.

Therefore, improvements of the maxima plugin are directed towards a simplified setup procedure. Ideally, after installing the plugin from the extension manager, the plugin searches for an existing Maxima installation and just uses this. There are chances that this can be done in a portable way (e.g. by storing relative paths).

Is it possible for you to build the plugin from SVN sources? Otherwise I might ask Andrey and Davide to help me with the upload to the extension manager in order to streamline test iterations.

For now, here is the Maxima 5.40 enabled plugin. Please report any issues.

MaximaPlugin.zip (67kb) downloaded 42 time(s).
Update16pre.sm (33kb) downloaded 53 time(s).
Update16pre.pdf (212kb) downloaded 55 time(s).

The update/changelog is with respect to the current plugin version in the extension manager.

The plugin is not yet updated in the online gallery. If you want to try it with the current beta SMath (0.98.6398) then you can download the plugin from the gallery and exchange the dll by the attached one (in the zip file).

EDIT: I updated the zip file with the dll above. It now runs with Maxima 5.40 SCBL and CLISP.

In Maxima 5.40 under windows you can configure which Lisp interpreter to use: Steel bank common lisp (SCBL) or CLISP. With SCBL, the Maxima test file runs more than twice as fast as with CLISP (18 vs 42 seconds on my Win7 notebook). However, if you load packages for the first time, package compilation takes much longer in SCBL, this might overstretch the communication timeout. To overcome this, open wxMaxima and load the packages there.

Yes, I think that is a good idea that plugin only work for linking SMath and Maxima

Nop... sorry, I don't have the skills for that. But I can help testing.
