That's true only if you don't use line() to define your function; in this case to avoid the behavior you must set the optimization of the function definition to "numeric".

All in all, SMath functions are called ALWAYS using call by reference also known as pass by reference.
That is, the function can modify the variable used as argument.
Look this post about global and local variables / scope of variables

This is a bit away from the original subject reporting a units bug. Good
