Totally empty file. AFAIK is the first case since a long time. Any clue about what could have triggered the crash? (since the last successful save, have you done/added/deleted something unusual, some action while saving?) Edited by user 10 January 2017 03:09:59(UTC)

I was making some minor changes to the working file. When trying to select and move some assigned variables, then suddenly got the "usual warning that Smath does not respond". When clicked to quit, got an option to save it and clicked to save. The file closed, but then unable to reopen any more (showing the above error message).

Thank you for the report! I thought we have no such issues anymore... To finally fix it I think SMath Studio should never immediately replace files on Save, but always create a new file next to existing one and replace old one with a new file only in case it was correctly saved. Will implement this logic asap. I hope you have a backup of this worksheet as there is no any possibility to restore it using a file you have attached. Best regards.

I just had the same problem. Build 6179. Erased a large SMath file on a crash. Same situation as ndtma. I am hoping I have it backed up. There is no way to recover it, correct?

From observations:
The case of Legendre crashing was no problem to recover because it was a crash between 5346 & 6179. Much differently, if a crash occurs while working on a new document, the document is not saved as it was before crashing ... "root element missing". Mathcad 11 didn't have provision to backup the work sheet as far as coding was OK before a crash.
The question is: can it be done, does such backup existS ? Answer is YES OriginLab [the main software in Medical/Pharmacokinetics] has this type of backup. But: OriginLab is not an "Equation editor" like Mathcad, Smath
There is another case of Smath not recovering file, from observation. In Mathcad, an image is created from the work sheet or recovered from file. In Smath, once an image has been successfully plotted in the work sheet, it resides in its own system and can be recalled from the named image. But if the image has not completed the plot, the entire work sheet can't be saved and is not saved. So, clicking on the file name from the C:\ ,,,, "root element missing" no file.
Eventually, an Smath document may become large in size an quite involved in maths for instance lot of 'maple stuff'. As the work progresses, wise to make copy and work on the copy and progressively save the copy as the original.
Have a good day.

Hi all, I seem to have the same issue. Tried to open my file the next day since the last time I worked on it but gave me error that "Root element is missing". Tried to use the Smath file recovery and it gives me error "Operation aborted: Not enough Data to recover or wrong file type". Filename is still the same as it always were, last thing I did on it when I worked on the file was adding a simple 2d plot, don't know if that might have caused it ?
Is there any way to recover the file since the last discussion on this topic? What is worrying me is that the file size changed to "0 kB" ...
Regards

Regards Unfortunately the file is empty so there's nothing to recover; currently only chance is to have a backup copy somewhere. Last edit on the working worksheet was made with current version (SS 0.98.6179)? |
