The descriptions of functions are not visible in html files when you put them over the functions or in the left side of the functions, but if you put them in the right side of the functions, the descriptions are visible.
If you print a pdf or an image of the file with functions and descriptions, all the descriptions are visible; I think that only the html output cuts the descriptions because it converts the functions (and the stuff in math mode) into png images, but it does this with an specific graphic area of the functions (with or without descriptions), the descriptions are not included in this graphic area, so they are not visible.
