Version 0.96.4909, Win7 I am using the same SMath version but Win XP SP3 and cannot duplicate the crash you describe. If I follow your steps a get (a+!= and depending upon if a and b would have been assigned values either an error a sof "a" being unknown or the correct numeric result.

Must be a*b instead of a+b. after a*b typing space extends the underline cursor to the expression a*b. When you then type !, the underline shrinks to b! and typing = causes the crash. mkraska attached the following image(s):
